After a fact‑finding consultation the firm develops an investment strategy that reflects a client’s time horizon and risk tolerance and implements it through diversified portfolios that may include individual stocks, bonds, exchange‑traded funds, closed‑end funds, business development companies, options, REITs and other public securities. Accounts are managed on a discretionary basis, monitored continuously, reviewed at least annually, and clients receive custodial statements at least quarterly.

A distinctive feature noted in the brochure is that SML may, in certain instances, charge performance‑based fees tied to quarterly gains and the attainment of a new high‑water mark, a practice that is uncommon among independent advisors. Operationally, the firm uses Interactive Brokers as custodian and discloses that management fees are computed and deducted by the custodian using a daily formula, and that it does not vote client proxies (clients retain proxy voting responsibility).
